Instead of giving out report cards, the teachers at SB Charter School write narratives for each of their students. Today I got Christopher's narrative and I am SO proud of his hard work and progress. Here are some excerpts from the narrative:
"Christopher is bright, kind, and productive in the classroom. On the outside he may seem shy, but he has a lot to offer both as a student and friend. Not only is he smart, he is also a good friend and a helpful role model to his fellow classmates. He approaches school and schoolwork in a positive way...Christopher's easy-going personality makes him a pleasure to be around.
Christopher has made wonderful progress in reading! He has a strong phonemic awareness and is able to blend letter sounds to read unknown words...His reading skills are progressing quickly, so he sometimes benefits from a reminder to track words with his finger to help him keep his place...Christopher's focus and effort during reading make him a top reader in his group. Next in reading, we will help Christopher choose independent reading books that are at his interest and reading-level.
Christopher needs continued practice in writing. As in most areas of school, Christopher approaches writing assignments with much effort and focus. During a recent writing sample students were asked to write about a special present someone gave them. Christopher sat in a quiet alone desk and started writing immediately. His writing sticks to the prompt as he explains that his Atlantic Lego set is his favorite toy...Writing doesn't come easily to Christopher and he usually takes his time to complete a writing task...His printing floats above the line but is neat and legible.
...Christopher prefers to draw pictures for his stories first, then add writing...
...Christopher is a skilled mathematician! He is an efficient worker who completes his work quietly and focused. During math discussions Christopher often raises his hand to share an answer, strategy, or review of vocabulary.
...The hands-on nature of our science program is a perfect match for Christopher! He is respectful to classroom materials and to his peers. Christopher exudes excitement whenever we gets to do and experiment in science, and is often a leader in his group...Christopher enjoyed exploring the concepts of position, balance, counterweight, and stability. He especially liked balancing a pencil on its tip and was determined to keep trying until he mastered it. He was also able to measure linear distances using standard metric system asking, "Do we get to take these measuring strips home?" (And yes, he brought them home, including several from other students!) When asking the class what a stable position is, Christopher raised his hand and said, "A stable position is when something is balanced."
...During a recent visit from the Humane Society, Christopher was complimented for waiting patiently and politely. This does not surprise me, as he is a respectful child who listens to the speaker, whoever they might be. He has a calm energy about him...Christopher is just as talented an artist as he is a student. He draws carefully detailed pictures that realistic forms and style.
...It is a joy to have Christopher as part of the classroom learning community. He is always willing to lend an extra hand or help someone in need. His calm and focused disposition is nice to be around, it is no wonder he is a sought out playmate. Christopher's quiet personality should not be overlooked, as he is very smart and has much to say when given the chance. We will continue to encourage Christopher to share his knowledge during discussions and help him forage relationships with other through group projects and partner work. Keep up the great work, Christopher!"
Way to go, Christopher!
